Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta issues transfer demand to Gunners board over summer plans

Published

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says he wants backing from the board in the transfer market as they gear up for a pivotal summer. The Gunners are short on funds after a big summer of spending in 2019.

The club also faces big decisions on the futures of the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mesut Ozil.

Arteta wants to implement his vision and philosophy but will need support in the transfer market to get the players he needs.

And the Spaniard made clear he wants deals done efficiently and swiftly with everyone pulling in the same direction.

“Absolutely, we have to plan,” he said.

“We need to know the direction we want to head and to do that we need bear in mind different scenarios.

“With that in mind I have to tell the club what we need, where we think we can improve and where we need to aim.

“And if we all end with the same thing, we put a plan together to try and execute it and make the process as short as possible.”

Arsenal embarked on a four-day warm-weather training camp in Dubai with the entire squad during the winter break.

“Apart from that, it was great to be together and spend some time together, get to know each other, not just the players but the staff and the backroom staff as well. It was a very productive trip.

“I wanted to give [the players] a few days rest because they went through a lot of things in the last few months.

“After that, we reflected on what we did together in the last five or six weeks since I joined, the things we improved and are very positive and we have to maintain, and also the things we need to improve and develop.

“We worked really well, we agreed and set some targets and we have started to work on them and hopefully we can see the outcome in the next few weeks.”

Eden Hazard injury

Zinedine Zidane is not sure if Eden Hazard will play for Real Madrid again this season.

The former Chelsea playmaker is facing another lay-off after fracturing an ankle in Real’s surprise defeat to Levante in LaLiga last weekend.

It was only the Belgian’s second appearance since November after recovering from another injury to the same ankle.

The loss of the 29-year-old, who is yet to make his mark since his £89million move from Stamford Bridge last summer, is a big blow to Zidane at the start of a crucial week.

Real host Manchester City on Wednesday in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie before facing arch-rivals Barcelona, who leapfrogged them to top spot in LaLiga last weekend, on Sunday.

“He loves playing football and while I can’t tell you what is in his eyes, I can see he is not happy,” Zidane said. “It’s important he stays positive but, of course, it’s difficult. It’s a bad moment, it won’t be easy and he will feel like that for a while.

“I do not know if he will have to go through an operation. It is not my area and I don’t know if his season is over, but I hope not.”

Barcelona make Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang transfer decision amid Arsenal exit rumours

“He’s already one of Arsenal’s highest earners, I think he’s the second highest after Mesut Ozil.

“But the issue is this is a team that’s rebuilding and they’re rebuilding to be competitive in a couple of years’ time.

“If keeping Aubameyang is going to mean a long-term contract that takes him up to 34 or 35 years old and ties you up with a ton of money, that might not be the right thing for Arsenal.

“So I think it’s going to depend on what sort of suitors are out there, who’s looking for a centre-forward?”
