Arsenal urged to make Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang decision to avoid transfer drama

Published

on

Arsenal need to decide their stance on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future at the club as soon as possible, former Gunners defender Nigel Winterburn believes. The Gabon international’s long-term future at the Emirates is currently up in the air.

Barcelona are keen on signing Arsenal’s talismanic striker, an interest which was recently revealed by their sporting director Eric Abidal.

Aubameyang’s contract with the north Londoners, whom he joined in January 2018, expires in the summer of 2021.

And it’s understood the former Borussia Dortmund man is eager to play in the Champions League, a tournament the Gunners have been absent from for the last three campaigns, next season.

Arsenal are unlikely to qualify for next season’s Champions League as they’re currently seven points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

“If the indication is that he’s not going to sign, they may have to take the opportunity and say, ‘Right, we’re going to take £40 million or whatever.’

“I don’t think they’re going to get 70 or 80 that they’re talking about with a year left for a player that’s coming to 31 years of age.

“For me, it’s more important whether the player wants to stay, who comes calling in the summer, and do Arsenal take the risk or can they convince him to sign a new contract?  At the moment, it’s so difficult to call.”

Winterburn’s view on Arsenal’s Aubameyang problem isn’t shared by his former Gunners team-mate Paul Merson, who believes his old side shouldn’t contemplate selling him in the summer.

He said: “If I was Arsenal I would keep him and tell him to give us what they can next season, get us back in the Champions League and then you can go for free. It’s hard to buy goals and this guy is a natural goal-scorer. It’s hard to buy that.”

Aubameyang has been Arsenal’s star performer this season, scoring 17 goals in 29 appearances this campaign.

Since swapping Dortmund for London, Aubameyang has found the back of the net 58 times in 98 appearances, during which he’s also provided 13 assists.

Arsenal will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, welcoming Everton to the Emirates.

Sky Sports claim that Gunners head coach Mikel Arteta highly admires fellow Spaniard Soler and is eager to bolster his midfield options when the transfer window eventually re-opens.

Soler has featured for Spain at U19 and U23 level and become a key player for Valencia since being promoted to his boyhood club’s senior squad in 2016.

Highly rated winger Ferran Torres, who is admired by Liverpool, Manchester City and Bayern Munich, could also leave in the next transfer window while striker Rodrigo has suitors too.

Arsenal want to bolster their squad in a number of areas but Soler’s valuation may prove too rich for them while they remain open to renewing a deal for Dani Ceballos who has been on loan from Real Madrid.

Robbie Savage reveals he hid from Arsenal’s kit man after swapping his shirt with Thierry Henry after he scored his 100th Gunners goal against Birmingham in 2003… but now he’s finally offered to return it in a frame!

  • Robbie Savage swapped shirts with Thierry Henry after his 100th Arsenal goal
  • Henry did not realise at the time that he had reached the century milestone
  • He sent Arsenal kit man to retrieve it – but Savage hid it and snuck away
  • Former Birmingham midfielder has now offered to return the framed memento

Robbie Savage has revealed he hid from Arsenal‘s kit man when Thierry Henry asked for the shirt he’d scored his 100th Gunners goal in back.

But, 17 years on, the former Birmingham midfielder has finally offered to return the memento – and he’s even framed it.

Savage, speaking on a special edition of BT Sport’s Early Kick Off show, admitted: ‘I’ve got a confession to make.

‘When I played against the legend that is Thierry Henry for Birmingham, he scored his 100th goal at St Andrew’s. After the game I asked to swap shirts with him, I gave him my shirt.

‘I don’t think he knew he’d scored his 100th goal in an Arsenal shirt. I took the shirt, put it in my bag.

‘When he realised, the kit man knocked on our dressing room, and said “Thierry wants his 100th goal in an Arsenal shirt back”.

‘I hid, snuck out the back door and took it home, and I’ve got it here. The actual shirt he scored his 100th goal in.’

And after producing the special Henry shirt, which he has the trouble of getting framed, he admitted it was time to return it to its rightful owner, and encouraged the French legend to get in touch.

He said: ‘Thierry, I’ve got the actual shirt you scored your 100th goal for Arsenal in. You can have it back. Wherever you are, I’ll send it to you.’

Henry scored twice in a 4-0 win over Birmingham back in January 2003, with his second, which finished off a fine team move, confirming his century of Arsenal goals 20 minutes from time.

The Frenchman is currently managing in Major League Soccer after taking over at Montreal Impact late last year.
