Granit Xhaka makes thinly-veiled swipe at Arsenal fans while on international duty with Switzerland victory

Granit Xhaka has made a thinly-veiled swipe at Arsenal fans whilst on international duty with Switzerland.

Xhaka was stripped of the Arsenal captaincy after confronting fans who booed him as he was withdrawn from the 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace last month.

He then issued an apology to the Gunners support, explaining that social media abuse aimed at his family had contributed to his furious reaction.

The Switzerland international has not featured for the north London club since the incident, missing the Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool, draws with Wolves and Vitoria, and last weekend’s defeat at Leicester.

In light of the outburst, Unai Emery decided to give the armband to striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Xhaka played his first minutes since the incident on Friday, starting in Switzerland’s 1-0 win over Georgia, where Cedric Itten headed the winner after coming off the bench to make his debut.

And after the game, Xhaka reignited his feud with Arsenal fans with a cryptic post written in German on social media.

He wrote: “Happiness is when you are satisfied with yourself and do not need the confirmation of others.”

Arsenal boss Emery has previously admitted Xhaka may have played his last game for the club.

Speaking ahead of the defeat to Leicester earlier in November, Emery said: “It’s important now to stay without Granit Xhaka, but I don’t know – maybe he can play in the future, maybe he can’t play.”
