‘He’s the closest thing to Thierry Henry I have seen since he left, he really is that good’: Martin Keown heaps praise on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang despite striker’s finishing ‘letting the Gunners down’ in draw with Sporting

Martin Keown compared Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Thierry Henry but highlighted his poor finishing in Arsenal’s 0-0 Europa League draw with Sporting Lisbon.

Aubameyang has started the season well, scoring nine goals in 13 games, but could not hit the target after coming on as a first-half substitute for Danny Welbeck.

And ex-Arsenal defender Keown felt the Gabon international’s mentality was not right when replacing his injured team-mate after 30 minutes.

Keown told BT Sport: ‘He is the closest thing to Thierry Henry that I have seen since he left the club, he really is that good. Someone in his camp should be pushing him on, dragging that performance out of him because he is a special talent, he scores lots of goals and it’s just a hunger get him to boiling point, I don’t think he was there tonight.’

Aubameyang has struck up a good understanding with Alexnadre Lacazette and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, but was substituted in the Gunners’ last league match against Liverpool.

His best moment against Sporting came late on when he burst through on goal and was scythed down by defender Jeremy Mathieu who was shown a straight red card.

Aubameyang could only blaze the resultant free-kick over the bar, although a 0-0 draw was enough to secure Arsenal’s Europa League progress.

Keown added: ‘Aubameyang really let them down a bit in front of goal, if only he had taken his chances… He’s a player who I rate really very highly. He was taken off against Liverpool and he didn’t seem happy with that.

‘With the (Welbeck) injury, it caught him out more than anyone else, he wasn’t ready mentally and I think on another night he would have put these chances away.

‘Mkhitaryan is a player who really looks out for him, they seem to have a telepathic link-up – he just knows these balls are coming, when you see it from another angle it should be a goal. It didn’t quite come off for him.’

Joe Cole also highlighted the striker’s outstanding attributes but emphasised the need for greater focus and desire.

Cole said: ‘He is so talented he has such good physical attributes but he needs senior players pushing him on telling him how good he can be because his goal scoring record is good but he sort of flits in and out of games.

‘If I’m Aubameyang I’m looking around thinking I want to score goals like Kane or Aguero. I think he played within himself and he just needs a little push.’

Arsenal news: Unai Emery decides to sell ONE player in January, replacement lined up

Published

The Egypt international is yet to play in the Premier League under Emery this season.

Elneny, 26, has been hit and miss since joining the Gunners in 2016 from Basel.

And according to The Sun, Emery is desperate to pocket £15m for Elneny in the January transfer window.

They say Leicester could be a potential landing spot for the defensive midfielder in the New Year.

Should Emery’s wish be granted and Elneny leaves Arsenal, the Gunners want Villarreal midfielder Pablo Fornals as his replacement.

The 22-year-old will cost just £17.8m due to a release clause in his current contract.

Spain international Fornals has netted three goals and chipped in with two assists in all competitions this season for Villarreal.

Emery was forced to change his January transfer plans following Danny Welbeck’s horror injury.

The striker has more than likely played his last game for Arsenal after breaking his ankle in the Europa League earlier this month.

That leaves Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette as Emery’s only real options up top.

Gunners legend Ray Parlour recently told Express Sport that Emery is already making plans ahead of the January window.

He said: “I’m sure they’ll be positions he wants to. For me centre-half he could probably strengthen.

“But he’s got [Laurent] Koscielny coming back, they’ve missed him.

“He’s a little bit older but I’m sure he’s working hard to get back in the side so I think he’ll assess the situation when it comes to January.

“He’ll be lining people up anyway.”

Arsenal are back in action this weekend against Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Miguel Almiron coming to Arsenal? – VIDEO Skills, Goals and Assists

Now that it is quite possible that Arsenal are going to be signing Miguel Almiron from Atlanta in January when the MLS season ends. I must admit that our new scouting team appear to have made very good choices at cheap prices so far, so I am hoping that Almiron turns out to be just as good.

Anyway I thought it would be worth revisiting a couple of videos of his time in the USA for you to check out his skills during the last 12 months. The first one shows all 12 of his goals in 31 games for Atlanta…

And this one shows Almiron’s goals, skills and assists.

He looks quite good doesn’t he?
