‘I’m more explosive now off the ball’: Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson believes season on loan at Hoffenheim can help him impress with England Under-21s

  • Reiss Nelson feels loan spell at Hoffenheim can help him at international level
  • Arsenal winger produced an assist in 1-1 draw at home to Poland on Thursday
  • Nelson is taking inspiration from Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi

Reiss Nelson is ready to conquer Europe and believes a season in Germany can help him make England’s attack more explosive.

The Arsenal winger is coming to the end of a year with Hoffenheim and the impact of that move was evident on Thursday in Bristol; his jet-heeled performance, in which he set up Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal, was one of the highlights of the Under-21s 1-1 draw with Poland.

There is a wave of exciting forwards emerging, headed by Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Nelson is taking inspiration from the exploits of his peers, who are both in the senior squad, and his ambition is to join them.

His immediate aim, though, is to help Aidy Boothroyd’s squad deliver on their huge promise and win in Italy and San Marino and his confidence comes from the time he has spent in the Bundesliga that has helped him mature.

‘There have been ups and downs but you get that in football,’ said Nelson. ‘This is my first year really playing professional football and I am enjoying it. I want to go to the very top but it’s important to stay grounded and hopefully I can one day achieve a lot of things. My German is good… Alles ist gut!

‘I have developed. It’s not just on the pitch but off the pitch as well. I’m working in the gym. I went there as an 18-year-old and I was finding it difficult to put weight on. They got me in the gym, they got me doing more weights and I think you can see the improvements in my game.

‘I’m more explosive now off the ball. I don’t just need the ball into my feet, I can run in behind and it’s helping a lot.’

England have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years in age group competitions but the one tournament that has proved to be out of reach in the Under-21 European Championships; their last success was in 1984 and Nelson is desperate to change that statistic.

‘I’ve been playing since I was Under-14 for England but I haven’t won anything yet! I missed the Under-19s in Georgia,’ he said.

‘There are a lot of medals in our dressing room. This is a chance to put a marker down for the future. It would be great to come back with it on our shoulders.’
