Six things Arsenal must do if they want to beat Liverpool

Published

on

Liverpool is a fantastic team but they are not unbeatable and while it may be a tall order to come away from Anfield with all three points next Saturday, it is not impossible.

Unai Emery is a top-class professional coach and will always know better than the likes of me and no doubt he and his team will be plotting ways to neuter the Reds.

But some things are fairly obvious even to us armchair fans with delusions of grandeur and if Arsenal is to beat Liverpool then there are some things they simply must do to give themselves a chance.

Stop Liverpool on the flanks

Probably a bit of a no brainer this one but if Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold are not stopped they will cause absolute havoc as they did all last season. Nacho Monreal and Ainsley Maitland-Niles will have to stand toe to toe with those two and not give an inch.

Play Liverpool at their own game

One way of stopping Robertson and Alexander-Arnold is to force them to defend, Monreal and Maitland-Niles with Pepe and probably Aubamayang in front of them have the capability to dominate down the flanks and the more they go at Liverpool out wide the less potential there is for the Reds to control the flanks.

Pressure van Dijk with pace

Virgil van Dijk is a world-class defender, one of the best in fact but he will not be able to cope with the pace of Aubameyang and Pepe if it comes to a battle of speed. Long balls, high balls and battling at close quarters will always give van Dijk the advantage but get a little space and run at him and the Arsenal forwards will get the upper hand, it really is as simple as that.

Midfield cannot be lost

Liverpool do not possess the best midfielders in the world but what they do have is players that put in efficient consistent performances and you can take it to the bank that the likes of Milner, Wijnaldum and Henderson or whoever they play in the centre of the park will put in performances that are a seven or eight and our midfielders must do the same, Torreira, Guendouzi, Ceballos, whoever Emery picks must be just as efficient and consistent if Arsenal are to have any chance of winning the game.

The defence cannot afford any mistakes

When you have Mane, Salah and Firmino coming at you and you make a mistake then it is all over, they will pounce and take advantage, it is what they have been doing for the last 12 months and Luiz, Sokratis and co have to be on top of their game, they cannot give those guys an inch, in fact, not even a millimetre, they are absolutely fearsome and prey on weakness and mistakes.

Get the ball to the forwards as quickly as possible

Mane, Salah and Firmino may be world-class and brilliant but in Pepe, Aubameyang and Lacazette Arsenal can match them but for them to be effective they have to see a lot of the ball and quickly. The Arsenal front three have the capability to cause chaos and if Arsenal is to come away from Anfield with all three points then it is the front three that will probably be the ones to deliver that win.

Tahith Chong swap

Juventus are plotting a swap deal to sign Manchester United winger Tahith Chong.

Chong, 19, has just over seven months remaining on his Old Trafford contract and is reportedly interested in leaving the club.

The Netherlands Under-21 international has caught the attention of Juventus, who are hopeful of snapping up his signature for free next summer.

However, Italian publication Corriere dello Sport say the Serie A champions have another idea – and that’s to include him in the deal for Mario Mandzukic.

Sander Berge latest

Chelsea have entered the congested battle to sign Genk midfield Sander Berge.

Liverpool are leading the chase with the player openly revealing his desire to play at Anfield in the future.

But despite his preference to play for the Premier League leaders and a personal chat with manager Jurgen Klopp after a recent Champions League encounter – Frank Lampard’s side are interested.

Chelsea’s two-window transfer ban could be lifted after tomorrow’s hearing at the Court of Arbitration and Berge could be their first January arrival.

Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappe wants to join Real Madrid.

That’s the audacious report from Spanish outlet El Chiringuito, who claim the French international will reject any contract proposals from PSG.

The 20-year-old superstar joined PSG for £165million in August 2017 and has since become the most valuable player in world football – reported to be worth £342million.

He’s contracted until June 2022 but El Chiringuito claim his mother and agent has confirmed that no contract offers will be entertained.

  • Man Utd and Arsenal are set to battle it out for Parma star Dejan Kulusevski
  • Denis Zakaria will not be leaving Borussia Monchengladbach in January
  • Arsenal have identified their long-term replacement for Granit Xhaka
  • The Gunners are looking to sign RB Salzburg teenager Dominik Szoboszlai

Wanted: Dejan Kulusevski

Manchester United and Arsenal are set to battle it out for Parma playmaker Dejan Kulusevski.

Kulusevski, 19, caught United’s eye by chance when the club’s chief scout flew to monitor Chris Smalling’s progress at Roma.

The Sweden international, who earned his first international cap against the Faroe Islands on Monday, has scored twice and provided five assists in 12 Serie A appearances.

Unai Emery’s Gunners are also interested in the winger, who is expected to cost £40million.

No deal for Denis Zakaria

Denis Zakaria will not be leaving Borussia Monchengladbach in January.

That’s according to his agent, who has responded to reported interest from Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United.

“Denis will not leave Borussia in the winter, a change is 100 per cent excluded,” agent Mathieu Beda told Sport BILD .

“Denis is in very good shape in Gladbach and has been playing really well for weeks, but he still has more potential and he wants to show that in Gladbach now instead of dealing with a change.”

Dominik Szoboszlai identified

Arsenal have identified their long-term replacement for Granit Xhaka.

Xhaka, 27, is expected to leave the Gunners having been stripped of the captaincy after telling fans to “f*** off” as he was jeered off against Crystal Palace.

And Football Insider claim RB Salzburg teenager Dominik Szoboszlai has been chosen to fill his boots.

The versatile midfielder has been on Arsenal’s radar for quite some time and scouts are planning to watch him when Hungry take on Wales tonight.

Arsenal development

Luis Enrique isn’t keen on taking the Arsenal job should Unai Emery be sacked, according to reports.

The former Barcelona manager left his post as Spain manager earlier in the year, choosing to walk away from the hotseat at a time where his nine-year-old daughter was dying of bone cancer.

He’s been tipped to return to management with Arsenal amid the struggles of Emery, who is fighting a face to keep his job.

But ESPN claim that Enrique isn’t keen on returning to management just yet.
